Art(ology) Celebrates Artwalk

As we head into the Fall Season, Art(ology) celebrated Artwalk with our show, Art Takes Flight! Works showcasing concepts including flight from living organisms or mechanical objects were on display as well as new works by our partners. We are getting ready for a full rehang this coming month which means lots of new works for the holiday season. Two shows on the horizon are our Collaborart show where each of our partners team up with other local artists to create works together and our Altered Book Show! We are also working towards offering items for sale online as well as two classes. Maria Robinson will be teaching Nuno Felted Scarves and Marsha Sutton will be teaching knitting classes. Thanks to all who came out for Artwalk this month, it was a great night as always!

~ Guest Artist for October & November ~

Kathy Friedline

Kathy Friedline was born and raised in the hills of West Virginia and grew up with a love of nature, especially animals, that is often reflected in her artwork.  “My fascination with art has always been that with a  brush and some paint, I can capture a moment in time.  I like the intimacy of everyday moments that are familiar and comfortable.  For so many of us, animals play an important role in those moments.”

Kathy works in acrylics, pen & ink, and watercolor.  She is an active member of the Mobile Art Association, Watercolor and Graphic Arts Society of Mobile, the Artist Figure Group, and the Mama Lisas.  In 2008, she curated “Pears& Chairs, a themed art show, at the West Regional Library.  She helps with coordinating  the “The Art of Reading” exhibit  for  the Mobile Public Library.  In October 2010, she and Joanne Brandt featured their  animal art in “All Critters Great & Small” at the Episcopal Church of the Redeemer.  Kathy's  interactive environmental murals can be found in local elementary schools.  She continues to create her ‘Porch Dog’ series and recently discovered the joy of keeping an art journal.

Mixed Media Techniques Combining Text with Art - Artist Showcase Michelle Leech

Art(ology) has several artists who specialize in mixed media, Ardith Goodwin, Michelle Leech, and Claire Noojin. One of the techniques these three have in common is utilizing text as an art medium. In the Post Modern Era, artists are now embracing the freedom to experiment with mediums, forms, texts, and styles in an effort not simply paint an object, but to share a message that transcends through the art. Adding text as a layer, as the main focal point, or in addition to the art are several ways these mixed media artists create unique works.

Artist Showcase: Michelle Foreman Leech

Many of Michelle Leech's pieces contains text, but her new Portal Series is new to Art(ology).

Michelle writes, "Doors, Gateways and Passages throughout history have been used to represent the movement from one phase of life to another, a portal if you will through which one travels that effects change. Behind these doors can be found stories about the lives that grace the thresh holds. Throughout my life I have taken photos and collected images of doors that were of particular interest. Using photo transfer these images can be seen in a series titled "DOORS". The text that is used comes from poems, song lyrics, old book pages, scripture, quotes and journaling."

"Paper Portals: Are lunch size brown paper bag with gesso and acrylic paint is the base for a photo transfer. An edging is attached and beaded wire for hanging. Other items may be added; paint, lace, thread and then a coat of beeswax offers a dreamy effect."

Michelle has these and many other pieces combining text with paint, assemblage, beeswax, and wire. Make plans to visit Art(ology) and see these up close, experience the layers of each piece along with the message they share. To learn more about Michelle Foreman Leech, click on her tab up at the top of our page.
